Bjarki is surely one of the more subversive names in the common techno fan’s vocabulary, as evidenced by his latest single. The Icelandic DJ and producer (whose full name is Bjarki R. Sigurdarson) has shared “This 5321,” ahead of an EP of its namesake.
Galloping kick drums and stripped-down synths render “This 5321” a visceral expression. However, a feathery chord progression soaring over the high end of the arrangement softens it compared to much of what comes out of the hard techno subgenre.

Although Sigurdarson is best known for his work in techno, the bbbbbb label boss has found himself swayed by more eclectic musings in recent years. Singles like “Fresh Jive,” which came out in late 2016, saw him explore ambient, experimental and IDM. His music has alrgely been championed by трип founder Nina Kraviz, who herself is no stranger to venturing outside of the sounds that came to define her career.
“This 5321” is the title track of an upcoming EP which will consist of four singles altogether, all hand picked by Kraviz from Bjarki’s folders of unreleased songs.
