In the world of techno, enlisting Ricardo Villalobos to remix your inaugural release is as good a start to a record label as any. Brad Wilder and Christopher Groove launched Offline Records with the latter artist’s Secret Garden EP, which includes Villalobos’ reimagining of the title track.
“Secret Garden” itself is built largely from instrumental and atmospheric samples atop an almost tribal drum beat. The Ricardo Villalobos remix infuses more sterile sound design elements into its own arrangement, which strikes the ear more softly than the source material.
Groove, an Austrian DJ and producer, cites his time clubbing in Ibiza during last year’s holiday season as inspiration for the single. The release arrives during the European leg of Villalobos’ tour, which has recently brought him to Croatia, Estonia and the Netherlands.
Hailing from Berlin by way of Santiago, Chile, Ricardo Villalobos has been a staple of the minimal techno scene since the ’90s. The peak of his career thus far arguably when he was named #1 spot in Resident Advisor‘s Top 100 DJs of 2008.
Secret Garden officially comes out on Offline Records July 28th. Since the title of the SoundCloud playlist reads “part1,” it’s safe to expect that Christopher Groove will put out a second installment sometime in the months to follow.
