The event is now set to take place on April 1st, 2023 due to ongoing restrictions around the COVID-19 pandemic. The Time Warp events in Brazil and Chile are still going ahead as planned.

The festival organizers addressed their fans last week with a statement. “Dear friends and fans, we are very sorry to announce that, given the current situation in Germany, we have no other choice other than to cancel Time Warp in Mannheim on April 2nd, 2022,” it reads.

On their reasoning for the third postponement, the team added, “This is very painful for us, as the pandemic has hit us for the third year in a row now and we were really looking forward to our return this April. Unfortunately, at the moment there is no reliable basis which we can use to plan or promote large-scale festivals. Nor is there any basis that would allow us to plan the Time Warp experience you would all be expecting.”

Time Warp takes place annually on Mannheim’s Maimarktgelände. Organized by the German event agency cosmopop, the renowned gathering attracts thousands of fans every year.

Among the performing acts are longtime Time Warp headliner Richie Hawtin — who has played the festival since its inaugural year, 1995, in Mannheim. Ricardo Villalobos will also perform alongside Tyrant co-founder Craig Richards, Seth Troxler will go back to back with a special guest, Pan-Pot will go back to back with Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann, as well as a set by Berlin’s Âme. Stephan Bodzin will orchestrate a live performance complete with a full hardware kit, and Nina Kraviz will return for her fourth year running.

Also performing are Adriatique, Shahar, Paula Temple, Desna, and a slew of other internationally and locally recognized DJs and producers, providing sounds from across the entire spectrum of techno and falling in line with Time Warp’s communal ethos. Since 2014, Time Warp has lovingly adopted New York as its second home outside of Germany, and 2021’s lineup promises to be an unforgettable return to form after the two year break.

Holding true to Time Warp’s penchant for straddling both mainstream and obscure ends of the techno spectrum, the roster offers plenty for the discerning fan. Billings such as Dax J and Paula Temple will appeal to fans of hard techno, whereas Sonja Moonear, Seebase and the like ought to showcase the genre’s experimental side. Perhaps most notable is the inclusion of venerated figurehead Laurent Garnier, who continues to command respect among diehards over 30 years into his career.

Where has the time gone?

Time Warp debuted in Ludwigshafen, Germany in 1994. The inaugural event billed such DJs as Speedy J, John Acquaviva and Garnier himself. Although Mannheim has played host to the festival more than any other location, it has taken place in such cities as Vienna, Bremen and Prague. 2019 saw the event brand return to New York City for the first time in five years.
