Beginning at 2:22pm PST on February 22, 2022, the stream marked one year since the French duo announced their split. It also coincides with the 25th-anniversary edition rerelease of their highly influential album Homework, which is available on streaming platforms now.

The featured performance was part of Daftendirektour, their first live tour that lasted from January to December of 1997. During this tour, they traveled extensively throughout Europe and North America. For the tour, the duo decided to use their own home studio equipment to play tracks and drop in samples. Very little footage from this tour exists, making the stream a unique opportunity for fans.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary, the re-release of “Homework” includes remixes from Masters at WorkDJ SneakTodd BerryMotorbass, and more. Nine of these remixes have been unavailable on streaming platforms until now.

A vinyl edition of Homework and their live album, Alive ’97, will be available once again starting on April 15th. Recorded at the Que Club on November 8th, 1997 as part of Daftendirektour, Alive ’97 features a 45-minute set featuring numerous elements that can be seen in the Mayan Theater stream.

Musician Behind Sample in Daft Punk’s “One More Time” has Never Received Royalties https://selector.news/2021/05/11/daft-punk-eddie-johns-one-more-time-royalties/ https://selector.news/2021/05/11/daft-punk-eddie-johns-one-more-time-royalties/#respond Tue, 11 May 2021 18:33:38 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=8073 The artist behind one of the most recognizable dance music samples in history, used in Daft Punk‘s “One More Time,” has never received royalties from the French duo’s hit song.

Eddie Johns, who recorded “More Spell On You” in 1979, was tracked down by The Los Angeles Times, who found him living in a supportive housing facility after a decade-long struggle with homelessness. Ten years ago, a stroke rendered Johns unable to work.

Johns’ case manager, Alyssa Cash, found a video explaining that one of Johns’ songs was sampled in “One More Time.” “It was like a lightbulb went off,” she said. “That’s Eddie, this is his song.”

Though Daft Punk had indeed officially licensed the sample, and have been paying royalties to the owner of the original recording of “More Spell On You” twice a year, ownership was transferred to a French label and publisher called GM Musipro when the label acquired the rights in 1995.

“We have not heard from [Johns] since the day we acquired in 1995 a catalog from another label that featured this title,” GM Musipro founder George Mary said in an email. “We have tried to do research on him, but without any result.”

“For our part, we are going to study his file and do the accounts to his credit,” Mary continued. “We will get back to him immediately on this subject, at the same time as we will inform him of his rights.”

“I just hope I can get some credit, you know?” Johns told The Los Angeles Times. “I’d like to have something to give to my daughter.”

Daft Punk Part Ways After 28 Years as a Duo https://selector.news/2021/02/22/daft-punk-split/ https://selector.news/2021/02/22/daft-punk-split/#respond Mon, 22 Feb 2021 16:44:55 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=6895 World-renowned electronic music act Daft Punk are breaking up after 28 years. The French DJ producer duo comprised of Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo hinted at the decision in a theatrical video, and their publicist later confirmed it.

The nearly eight-minute video, excerpted from their 2006 film Electroma, depicts the two artists wearing their iconic robot costumes walking out into a remote desert. One takes off his jacket to reveal a control panel on his back that the other uses to arm a bomb, which detonates and blows the first one up. The text “1993-2021” is then displayed before an extended shot of the second robot walking into the sunset.

Daft Punk publicist Kathryn Frazier confirmed the duo’s split to Pitchfork. No reason has been given at the time of writing.

Who Were Daft Punk?

Building upon the “French touch” house music movement, Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo formed Daft Punk five years after meeting in 1987. They released their debut single, “The New Wave,” in 1994, and they would later remix it as “Alive,” which appeared on their 1997 debut album, Homework.

Tracks like “Da Funk” and “Around The World” helped Daft Punk introduce a highly influential style of electro funk to the world, as did “One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” from their 2001 effort, Discovery. As the years wore on both their musical output and public appearances became fewer and farther between, but they rode back into to the mainstream spotlight off the success of “Get Lucky” from their 2013 album, Random Access Memories.

Neither Thomas Bangalter nor Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo have indicated any future plans for their solo careers at the time of writing.

Nile Rodgers Co-Wrote Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” After a Cancer Diagnosis https://selector.news/2017/06/26/nile-rodgers-co-wrote-daft-punk-get-lucky-diagnosis-cancer/ https://selector.news/2017/06/26/nile-rodgers-co-wrote-daft-punk-get-lucky-diagnosis-cancer/#respond Mon, 26 Jun 2017 15:08:51 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=269 Seldom do world-class musicians make the kind of comeback that Nile Rodgers has – let alone while battling a potentially fatal illness. The ’70s disco guitarist and co-founding member of Chic took to the stage at Glastonbury Festival this past weekend and revealed that he co-wrote Daft Punk‘s 2013 smash hit “Get Lucky” featuring Pharrell after being diagnosed with an “extremely aggressive cancer.”

Rodgers told the audience that he learned of his ailment six years ago, two prior to the last time he played Glastonbury. At the time he had refrained from discussing it publicly, but beamed this time around while announcing that he was officially cancer free.

“Get Lucky” would go on to catapult not only Rodgers but also Daft Punk and Pharrell back into the mainstream spotlight after selling 9.3 million copies and winning two Grammys. In the time since, the seminal disco and funk guitarist has been afforded the opportunity to reach the youngest generation of dance music fans.

Nile Rodgers continues the 2054 tour with Chic alongside Earth Wind & Fire with a performance in Oakland, California on July 12th.

Daft Punk Break Silence with Parcels Collaboration “Overnight” https://selector.news/2017/06/21/daft-punk-break-silence-parcels-collaboration-overnight/ https://selector.news/2017/06/21/daft-punk-break-silence-parcels-collaboration-overnight/#respond Wed, 21 Jun 2017 05:15:14 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=152 Daft Punk fans have been clamoring for new music in 2017 and their fervor has finally been answered. The French house and electro duo have released a single at long last: a collaboration with Australian disco funk band Parcels titled “Overnight.”

It’s technically a Parcels track with Daft Punk credited as co-writers and producers, but with that said it’s not a departure from the duo’s recent musings. Taking into account Parcels’s rich and largely instrumental signature sound, they would have fit right in with the likes of Nile Rogers and Giorgio Moroder on Daft Punk’s 2013 album Random Access Memories.

Rumors of a 2017 Daft Punk tour abounded last year, but none bore fruit. Fans were also disappointed with the duo’s theatrical 2017 Grammy Awards as they weren’t able to showcase any improvisational skills as DJs.

“Overnight” by Parcels is available on Spotify, although not in the U.S. as of this writing. Everyone else can find it here.
