Video of Inga Mauer’s Assault at Flow Festival Emerges https://selector.news/2017/08/17/video-inga-mauers-assault-flow-festival-emerges/ https://selector.news/2017/08/17/video-inga-mauers-assault-flow-festival-emerges/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2017 05:32:48 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=1176 This year’s edition of Flow Festival in Finland was overshadowed by allegations that security guards wrongfully assaulted and detained Russian DJ and producer Inga Mauer. For the first time since the incident, footage of the incident has reached the public.

The video clip (which has been slowed down to 80% speed by the poster) shows security guards approaching Mauer while she’s eating, then taking her by either arm and guiding her away from where she was seated. The interaction devolves into a spectacle when she resists, prompting the guards to forcibly restrain her while others stand in the way of the camera.

Mauer had originally posted the video to her Facebook profile, but subsequently took it down. She also removed a previous post describing her account of the exchange, which included details of her detainment and release by police officers following what transpired in the clip recorded by her friend’s boyfriend.

Spokespeople on behalf of security subcontractor Local Crew Oy have not responded to the allegations at this time.

Video from Raid of Moscow DIY Nightclub Rabitza Surfaces https://selector.news/2017/08/14/video-raid-moscow-diy-nightclub-rabitza-surfaces/ https://selector.news/2017/08/14/video-raid-moscow-diy-nightclub-rabitza-surfaces/#respond Mon, 14 Aug 2017 15:51:42 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=1132 Rabitza found itself in the crosshairs of Moscow authorities last week. The DIY techno nightclub had been raided by Russian police on August 6th, and a controversial video from the incident has now reached the masses.

Sources told Resident Advisor that plainclothes officers entered Rabitza just before 8:00 AM and began arresting staff members and attendees. The footage shows them exerting considerable physical force on several of them, with one officer kicking the club’s cofounder as he lies on the ground.

Rabitza is among a wave of nightclubs that have emerged as a result of Russia’s recent economic crisis driving rent costs down. As more traditional nightclubs like Solyanka, Monasterio and Arma have been forced to close down during their own financial difficulties, DIY creative spaces have become a more common option for Moscow partygoers.

A month ago, Rabitza had undergone a planned inspection in which the authorities announced themselves upon entry. This time, eight staff members were detained and two face charges, including cofounder Ivan Radzievsky, who has been released but is not allowed to leave Moscow for the time being.

On the Rabitza Facebook page, its owners have issued a statement requesting donations that will go towards court costs and keeping the venue open.

Eric Prydz Debuts “Pry-Trance” Single at Hï Ibiza https://selector.news/2017/08/14/eric-prydz-debuts-pry-trance-single-hi-ibiza/ https://selector.news/2017/08/14/eric-prydz-debuts-pry-trance-single-hi-ibiza/#respond Mon, 14 Aug 2017 13:45:42 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=1123 An as-yet-unreleased ID that surfaced from one of Eric Prydz‘ sets has his fans in a frenzy. The Swedish icon took to the stage at Hï Ibiza in the most recent installment of his Tuesday residency to premiere a track that’s easier to categorize than much of his discography.

Prydz had cryptically tweeted the solitary phrase “Pry-Trance” last month with no further explanation. Considering the producer’s penchant for cryptic releases, fans speculate that the tweet was an allusion to the song he just dropped. Indeed, aside from a metallic swoosh that rings out repeatedly for much of the track, its sound design elements liken it to much of what comes out in the trance genre.

Although his signature blend of progressive house and synthwave is in a class all its own, Prydz certainly isn’t averse to trance. He has performed at festival stages curated by Armin van Buuren‘s A State Of Trance in the past, and his diehard fan base overlaps with much of the genre’s impassioned following.

Eric Prydz has not revealed an official title or release date for his “Pry-Trance” single at this time. After a performance tomorrow, August 15th, he will close out his Hï Ibiza residency with a final show on the 22nd.

Joris Voorn Plays a Ferry Corsten Trance Classic at Ushuaïa Ibiza https://selector.news/2017/07/26/joris-voorn-plays-ferry-corsten-trance-classic-ushuaia-ibiza/ https://selector.news/2017/07/26/joris-voorn-plays-ferry-corsten-trance-classic-ushuaia-ibiza/#respond Wed, 26 Jul 2017 15:28:56 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=842 House and techno icon Joris Voorn played Ferry Corsten’s remix of “Barber’s Adagio for Strings” this past weekend at Ushuaïa Ibiza. It’s not the first time in recent memory that a well-known techno DJ has played a trance single, but Voorn’s enthusiasm made it more of a spectacle.

After his performance, Voorn proudly tweeted a video of himself playing the iconic breakdown of Corsten’s remix in front of a large crowd at the United Ants event at the Ibiza open-air club.

Progressive house superstar Eric Prydz supported Voorn’s selection, tweeting that “It is always OK to play what ever [sic] you want.”

Historically, techno DJs and trance DJs have avoided each other’s music. Both genres are steeped in two of the longest pedigrees in dance music and carry longstanding traditions that can deter their purveyors from supporting other styles.

While it is common for mainstream EDM artists to integrate hip-hop and multiple genres of dance music into their sets, classical dance music artists rarely venture outside their respective genre. However, trance has recently become more popular among a handful of techno tastemakers – Joris Voorn being the latest example.

Joris Voorn continues his tour with a performance at WILD LIFE at DC-10 in Ibiza on July 28th.

Gaia Rumored to be Billed for Dreamstate SoCal 2017 https://selector.news/2017/06/28/gaia-rumored-billed-dreamstate-socal-2017/ https://selector.news/2017/06/28/gaia-rumored-billed-dreamstate-socal-2017/#respond Wed, 28 Jun 2017 20:45:04 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=332 Just after announcing the 2017 edition of Dreamstate SoCalInsomniac Events is gearing up to reveal the lineup of their flagship all-trance festival. However, the promoter snuck an easter egg into their marketing materials that’s giving trance fans reasonable suspicion that Gaia will be among the artists on the roster.

Earlier today, Dreamstate’s organizers uploaded the following video to their Twitter account:

What caught the trance community’s eye, however, was a grainy image of two cloaked figures that flashed for a few scant moments:

Fans immediately identified the spooky visage as global trance icon Armin van Buuren and his longtime collaborator, Benno de Goeij, who occasionally perform together while donning robes under the pseudonym Gaia. Being that van Buuren has adopted a more mainstream, festival-friendly sound in recent years, the side project has given him an outlet to DJ and produce the classic style of 138 BPM trance for which he garnered worldwide renown.

Dreamstate is among Insomniac’s biggest recent success stories. After tickets to the 2015 edition of the SoCal festival sold out within hours of going on sale, the scope of the brand’s influence extended to several countries, and most recently a North American tour headlined by Paul van Dyk. Nearly overnight it has become a staple of classic trance diehards – but aside from a performance at a curated stage at the 2016 edition of EDC Las Vegas, Gaia has not officially been billed for a Dreamstate lineup as of yet.

Insomniac Events has announced that it will begin six days of lineup announcements for Dreamstate SoCal 2017 next Tuesday, July 4th.

The Black Madonna Talks About Her Run-In with a Cop on Horseback https://selector.news/2017/06/27/the-black-madonna-talks-run-in-cop-on-horseback/ https://selector.news/2017/06/27/the-black-madonna-talks-run-in-cop-on-horseback/#respond Tue, 27 Jun 2017 16:59:22 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=288 The Black Madonna is one of dance music’s more outspoken personalities as evidenced by her recent keynote speech at the International Music Summit (IMS) Ibiza on May 24th. Among other things, the Chicago DJ and producer (whose real name is Marea Stamper) described an incident involving an officer of the law, a horse, and an illegal warehouse rave.

During a part of her speech in which she discussed how “crack house” laws had put a damper on the early dance music scene, Stamper briefly segued into one of her own relevant experiences. Upon hearing the hoofbeats of a horse behind her while overseeing an unlicensed gathering, she recalled turning around to see a police officer approach her.

To Stamper’s relief, she said that the officer turned around and left after she told him that the event was “an electronic music convention” with “artists and academics that [had] flown in from all over the world.”

Stamper also discussed the issue of women’s role in dance music, extrapolating the injustices facing females in the industry to include those plaguing minorities and transgender individuals as well. Her voice had been among the louder ones following Berlin DJ and producer Konstantin‘s recent sexist remarks, so her comments on the matter are more relevant now than when she made them during her speech last month.

The Black Madonna continues her tour with a performance at Love International Festival in Tisno, Croatia tomorrow, June 28th.
