It has now come to light that the club must soon vacate the premises altogether.

Southwark Council approved plans to bulldoze a portion of the structure currently devoted to the storied venue. The decision was made in a July 11th meeting, according to My London. It is part of an initiative called the Canada Water Masterplan intended to transform a 21.27 hectare area around Canada Water into a metropolitan hub, creating 20,000 jobs in the process.

The though of Printworks shuttering its doors is nonetheless controversial. As of this writing, over 10,000 people have signed a Change.org petition to prevent the venue from meeting its apparent fate. It cites data from the Night Time Industries Association indicating that London has lost nearly 25% of its nightclubs since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis.

Printworks London opened its doors to the public in 2017 with a gathering headlined by Seth TroxlerThe Martinez Brothers, and Loco Dice. In the years since, acts like BicepGorillaz, and Aphex Twin have performed at the venue. Its parent company, Broadwick Live, recently shared plans to open another warehouse space called The Beams London.

David Waters of British Land has said that the property management company is working with Broadwick live to open a new “cultural venue” in the Canada Water area.

Temporary Pleasure Launch Fundraiser for Future Dublin Pop-Up Club https://selector.news/2022/05/16/temporary-pleasure-pop-up-club-kickstarter/ https://selector.news/2022/05/16/temporary-pleasure-pop-up-club-kickstarter/#respond Tue, 17 May 2022 01:43:04 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11536 Set in motion by rave architecture collective Temporary Pleasure, a Kickstarter campaign for a new Dublin pop-up club has been launched.

With the space already designed, the collective is looking for help building it. They also plan to offer a two-week design and build workshop for up to 50 participants.

In a six-week timeframe, they are looking at hosting 40 late-night and fringe events filled with over 100 Irish artists. Additionally, Temporal Pleasure is collaborating with 12 local organizations.

In 2021, they designed, built, and tested a prototype club in five days. Located in a disused warehouse, they realized the prototype together with 20 workshop participants, a carpentry shop, and a queer community center. The fundraiser goal is €25,000.

“Over the last two decades, 90% of Irish nightclubs have disappeared. This September, we’re turning a vacant inner-city space into a new ephemeral club — designed, built, and programmed by local communities who have lost their venues,” Temporary Pleasure wrote in a statement on the Kickstarter page.

“Earlier this year, we won an Arts Council ‘Engaging with Architecture’ Award, raising half the money we need to design and build a new club through public engagement,” they continue. “We’ve designed our dream club — now we need your help to build it.”

Fighting the fading of Irish nightlife, Temporary Pleasure is a group made up of of creatives and architects. Working closely with locals in the process, they transform unoccupied buildings into cultural pop-up locations.

For more information on the project visit the Kickstarter campaign.

Invite-Only Club Venus In Furs AKA Paragon Opens in Brooklyn https://selector.news/2022/04/26/venus-in-furs-paragon-brooklyn/ https://selector.news/2022/04/26/venus-in-furs-paragon-brooklyn/#respond Wed, 27 Apr 2022 01:21:59 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=11444 An invite-only club named Venus In Furs (also known as Paragon) has opened in the Bed Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Set in a multi-story space on Broadway Avenue, the club is a new project from John Barclay. Known for operating DIY club spaces, Barclay also had a hand in opening the indefinitely closed Bossa Nova Civic Club (BNCC) and 285 Kent.

Hopeful attendees must RSVP at the club’s website. RSVPing does not guarantee an invite, however.

Organizers have been quietly running events at the venue throughout the winter. On April 11th, BNCC publicly announced the club’s launch on Instagram. “As you may have heard, we have been working on a new spot for quite some time,” they wrote. “We’ve been keeping it secret until now but seems like it may be time to slowly open the gates.”

No COVID-19 restrictions are listed on the website. Last month, NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced that businesses, including indoor and outdoor concert venues, will no longer require proof of vaccination. Businesses, however, are still able to enforce their own set of requirements for entry.

The venue is located at 990 Broadway. Those interested in RSVPing to events at the club can do so on their website.

London Venue The Drumsheds Set to Close Permanently https://selector.news/2022/01/21/the-drumsheds-shutting-down/ https://selector.news/2022/01/21/the-drumsheds-shutting-down/#respond Fri, 21 Jan 2022 20:21:12 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=10707 London music venue The Drumsheds is permanently closing after one final show later this month.

Show promoter The Hydra announced the news on The Drumshed’s website. In it, they write about a show called NOT TO BE that was postponed last December and rescheduled to January 29th. “NOT TO BE will also be the last show ever at The Drumsheds, which closes its doors next month,” they explain.

The original show included headlining sets from artists such as Four Tet and Floating Points. While the headlining sets remain the same, other artists originally scheduled could not make it to this new show. “It was either this date, or canceling the event altogether,” reads the website verbiage. “But what a way to go, closing out this outstanding venue with this show…”

Operated by Broadwick Venues (the same company that owns popular venues Printworks London and Exhibition), The Drumsheds opened in June of 2019. It has a 10,000-person capacity interlinked across four warehouses along with 10 acres of outdoor space. It was developed as part of the Meridian Water in Enfield, a £6 billion regeneration project intended to turn the industrial area into a creative/artistic hub.

As of this writing, no reason for The Drumsheds’ closure has been given.

Building Fire Forces New York City’s Bossa Nova Civic Club to Close https://selector.news/2022/01/16/boss-nova-civic-club-fire/ https://selector.news/2022/01/16/boss-nova-civic-club-fire/#respond Sun, 16 Jan 2022 22:44:32 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=10633 Well-known Brooklyn venue Bossa Nova Civic Club has announced it is closing indefinitely due to a fire on the building’s third floor.

The fire was reported around 9:00 PM local time on January 12th. It didn’t reach the first floor where the Bossa located, but the club sustained extensive water damage. In other areas of the building, a tenant suffered secondary burns and another tenant’s dog died.

Club owners shared an Instagram story delivering the news, writing that it’s “safe to say we will be closed for a notable amount of time.”

A group calling themselves Friends of Bossa put together a GoFundMe page hoping to raise $300,000 to help the venue reopen. As of this writing they have raised over $94,000.

Opening in 2012, Bossa Nova Civic Club instantly became a hit because it was one of the few legal New York venues that curated a unique sound. At the many, many DIY venues similar to the Bossa were run illegally. Numerous artists began their career playing sets at the Bossa, including the techno feminist DJ collective Discwoman.

Multiple artists have expressed their condolences on Twitter. New York-based DJ Lychee wrote, “Bossa really has offered something for everyone in NYC techno.”

Those interested in donating to the venue’s GoFundMe can do so here.
