While her style remains distinct through each release, she continues to explore every edge of house music. She posses a well-honed gift for jilted bass lines, curious melodic riffs, and crispy beats – but this summer she began to experiment in the realm of breaks, dropping a few IDs in streams.

Now, we finally get to experience the full span of her journey into the broken with the Dance Night EP. It’s out now on Christian Martin’s Trippy Ass Technologies.

The title track, “Dance Night” is a spacious foray into classic electro. The drums are dirty with a bit of extra weight on the 808. VNSSA (real name Vanessa Barnes) toys with a multi-faceted array of psychedelic melodic motifs with a gritty 303 at its core. A hallmark of VNSSA’s tunes and a source of their allure is her own voice giving the song a hook. It’s worked so well on hits like “Word” and “Rave Grave,” and she continues to prove her songwriting ability by crafting a fun spoken word that only adds to the quirkiness of “Dance Night.”

She continues the electro onslaught with “Out Of My Head” featuring Bianca Gardner. This one has a heavy dose of acid and a spicy countermelody. What’s most fun about it is the balance of crispy clean drums and increasingly dirty and wonky synths. It’s the best kind of weird.

Label head Christian Martin joins brother Justin on the final tune to remix “Out Of My Head,” Evening out the EP with a bit of 4/4 action. The boys grab the melodic elements, make them even dirtier, and then repurpose them as a rollicking bass line, offering a perfect example of paying tribute to the original while making it the remixer’s own.

Dance Night is available via BandCamp, Spotify, and Beatport.

Eveningperple Release Debut EP on Holy Molé Including “Mirage” https://selector.news/2020/09/29/eveningperple-holy-mole-mirage/ https://selector.news/2020/09/29/eveningperple-holy-mole-mirage/#respond Tue, 29 Sep 2020 18:43:27 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=4167 Selector’s Afrofuturist series highlights the work of emerging BIPOC talent in electronic music.

New York duo Eveningperple have entered the scene with a series of breakbeat records that showcase a seldom-heard maturity of sound from producers in the genre. Their latest, “Mirage,” is an example of how the two producers blend influences into something completely fresh.

Eveningperple have spent eight years defining their style through a series of bootlegs and original releases. While it may not be fair to call them a young act, their release on CODESHoly Molé is a big step in their career.

Channeling some of the greatest in breaks, Yo Uri and Peter Black have elevated a sound that doesn’t’ often get enough attention outside of niche circles. The Stanton Warriors-esque tune is equally a call-back to a classic sound and a fresh slice of original flavor. The 808 buzzes as ethereal pads slither and slide in and out of the aural spectrum. The fact that the song is so multilayered is a feat unto itself. Atmospheric vocal samples stutter about while strings bob and weave through the snappy drum beats. All the while, a fiercely wompy bass hits all the right accents. There’s much to be heard here, yet it’s never crowded – at once a progressive gem and dance floor heater.

Uri and Black are college friends-turned production partners. Since their debut release in 2018 they’ve maintained a sound that deftly harnesses melodic elements while still being strictly dance floor focused. “Mirage” is available as part of their More Romance EP. The package includes three original tracks but he boys, as well as remixes from RIFFA, Proper Villians, and House Divided. You can buy or stream it here.
