June 19th, 1865 marks the end of slavery in the United States. By decree, General Gordon Granger set the slaves free at Galveston, Texas two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is now a celebration of liberty for Black Americans that many hope will become a national holiday.

Bandcamp CEO Ethan Diamond has shared plans to hold the fundraiser annually.

“We’ve been inspired by and joined in the growing call for racial justice and equity, and have celebrated the many new reforms, practices, and policies that bring us closer to a world where Black people and people of color can thrive without fear of violence and oppression,” he said in a statement. “At the same time, we are nowhere near where we need to be, and there is still much work to be done.”
