Selector’s Sounds series follows a procedure that puts music quality before status or industry relationships. Learn how it works.

Brian Sonnleitner and Justin Milkplant‘s West Coast U.S. label From 0-1 has dedicated the past 13 years to cultivating top shelf techno from a field of genuine artists they admire. Their latest compilation, aptly titled 13 Years of From 0-1, captures this longstanding ethos.

The label celebrates its anniversary with a track to represent each year of its lifespan. Specialists from around the globe feature, beginning with Venezuelan talent Juan Trujillo. His glitchy “Untaken Path” hypnotizes as it stomps. Polish veteran Szmer provides a contrasting touch of industrial with “M1.”

DIAPO and The Automatic Message continue down the industrial trail with unrelenting numbers “MOD 6” and “Masked And Featured,” respectively. Meanwhile, A Thousand Details‘ “Orange Man Injected Lysol” contrasts its cheeky title with a steely aesthetic.

Intelligent sound design is key in 13 Years of From0-1. From the cavernous, yet tightly tuned sonics of Andres Gil to the slow burning tensity by Vohkinne, the entire record oozes in studio expertise. Ultimately, the compilation proves that innovation still exists in techno—despite increased market saturation.

13 Years of From0-1 will be available for purchase via From 0-1 Bandcamp on August 30th.

Primal Scream Unearth Andrew Weatherall Remix of Screamadelica Single https://selector.news/2021/08/22/primal-scream-andrew-weatherall-shine-like-stars-remix/ https://selector.news/2021/08/22/primal-scream-andrew-weatherall-shine-like-stars-remix/#respond Sun, 22 Aug 2021 18:56:06 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=9160 Primal Scream have dug into their archives to bring Andrew Weatherall‘s take on “Shine Like Stars” to light. It teases a forthcoming slate of releases celebrating the 30th anniversary of their seminal album, Screamadelica—of which the single was a part

The band and the late producer shared a symbiotic relationship. Screamdelica marked Weatherall’s first go leading production duties in a major studio work. In turn, Weatherall’s idiosyncratic fusion of electronic music and the band’s rock sonics drove the album’s critical acclaim. The finished project pushed both acts into the mainstream as a result.

Screamadelica‘s commemorative release series comes in three parts. Andrew Weatherall’s newly debuted rework appears in a 12-inch vinyl box set of album singles and remixes, out September 17th. A double-vinyl picture disc will also be released. Finally, Demodelica arrives on October 15th with a series of early LP demos.

“Shine Like Stars” is the third track to receive Weatherall remix treatment. He also took on two other Screamadelica singles, “Dont Fight It, Feel It,” and “Loaded.”

UN Women UK Debuts Safe Spaces In Music with Strawberries & Creem https://selector.news/2021/08/13/u-n-women-u-k-debuts-safe-spaces-music-strawberries-creem/ https://selector.news/2021/08/13/u-n-women-u-k-debuts-safe-spaces-music-strawberries-creem/#respond Fri, 13 Aug 2021 21:04:00 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=9060 Cambridge, U.K. festival Strawberries & Creem Festival has partnered with UN Women UK to launch Safe Spaces In Music. The new initiative is a subset of Safe Spaces Now — a campaign geared toward progressing women’s safety in public spaces.

An open letter by the two organizations calls for the music and event industries to take safety matters into their own hands:

“…venues, festivals, studios and workplaces are too often not safe spaces for women, girls and marginalized genders.

It is high time we change that, and we have a collective responsibility to take action. This restart needs to be for all of us. Our spaces must provide safety from harassment, violence, and abuse of power. Music should be a place of joy and inclusion for all.

Let’s make 2021 the year the music and events industries rise up to the call of the #MeToo movement – and commit to change.”

The letter proceeds to name several disquieting statistics, including that 40% of women under 40 have been sexually harassed at a live music event. Up to 95% of victims don’t report it. Workplace culture in particular is to blame for lack of reporting by women in the music industry, argues the letter.

At time of writing, Strawberries & Creem has yet to outline how it will answer this call. It has, however, fulfilled a prior commitment to book 50% women on the bill.

Glastonbury, ticketing platform DICE and multiple high profile musicians have also signed onto the initiative.

Safe Spaces Now launched in March. It has since presented politicians with 150 ideas on making the U.K. a safer place for women. Various thought leaders, grassroots organizations, software engineers and students have participated in the campaign.
