Glastonbury Organizers Apply for September Concert License https://selector.news/2021/03/23/glastonbury-september-concert-license/ https://selector.news/2021/03/23/glastonbury-september-concert-license/#respond Tue, 23 Mar 2021 18:56:52 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=7569 Back in January, organizers officially canceled the 2021 iteration of Glastonbury Festival due to COVID-19. With vaccines being administered across The U.K., many have been asking if there are any smaller-scale events in the works in the absence of the flagship event. Last week, co-organizer Emily Eavis shared an update on their plans for 2021 and revealed that they’ve submitted an application for two events this year.

As detailed in her post, one of the applications is for September at their longtime home of Worthy Farm. The second event is for an undisclosed date in the summer at the same location. Due to the licensing process, Eavis has stated that the results of their application will likely take a few months.

When announcing the pair of prospective events, Eavis mentioned that the latter of the two is “not for partying.” While details of what she means remain unclear, the September outing has been described as a concert.

The next chapter of Glastonbury is scheduled to take place June 22nd-26th, 2022 at Worthy Farm in Somerset, England. More information on the event can be found on the event website.

Dubbed London Unlocked, it will see British artists perform in notable London locations every Sunday starting this week.

Each event will serve as a fundraiser to help Music Venue Trust support U.K. venues affected by the pandemic. Accompanying the announcement is a short teaser video giving fans information on what to expect from the seven broadcasts.

Fans will be able to enjoy performances from SHERELLE, Djrum, Tim Reaper, SkreamCrazy DBatuShy One, and others. On both their website and social media pages, LIB’s organizers released a statement explaining their decision. They wrote that even though vaccines are being administered, they believe it will still be unsafe to host a large-scale, in-person gathering at the originally scheduled date in the spring. The letter also shares how the minds behind the event are working hard to deliver “one of the wildest shows we’ve ever done” next year.

At the end of the statement, organizers note that those who requested a ticket transfer will receive more information via email. At the time of writing, tickets to the 2022 event are not yet on-sale – but there is a signup form on the festival’s website for those interested in receiving updates.

Before LIB 2020 was canceled, the Do LaB-powered event curated a multi-genre lineup for their Buena Vista Lake outing. Billings included Four Tet, James Blake, Empancipator, Jon Hopkins, and others.

The next in-person Lightning in a Bottle will take place over Memorial Day Weekend in 2022. In lieu of a physical event this year, organizers have promised the return of their digital event over the upcoming holiday weekend. You can find more information on the on the LIB website.

Spotify Introduces Lossless HiFi Streaming Subscription https://selector.news/2021/02/23/spotify-hifi/ https://selector.news/2021/02/23/spotify-hifi/#respond Tue, 23 Feb 2021 21:16:51 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=6954 Later this year, Spotify will offer subscribers access to high-quality lossless audio. Dubbed, Spotify HiFi, the new program will be an additional subscription that promises “CD-quality” sound for an extra fee per month.

While the price is not yet known, CNET reports that the upgrade will be “priced competitively with other high-quality-audio streaming tiers,” speculating that it will likely be an additional $10 a month on top of the basic Spotify subscription cost. Spotify HiFi was announced during Spotify’s recent Stream On live stream event.

On an informational page dedicated to the upgrade, Spotify shared that they’ve been working with speaker manufacturers to ensure that HiFi will be available on many devices through the use of their cloud-based Spotify Connect. “Ubiquity is at the core of everything we do at Spotify, and we’re working with some of the world’s biggest speaker manufacturers to make Spotify HiFi accessible to as many fans as possible through Spotify Connect,” it reads.

Spotify HiFi is set to launch to “select markets” sometime in 2021. At the time of writing, neither a specific release date nor information as to what countries will have access are known.

UK Live Music Industry Reacts to Reopening Announcement https://selector.news/2021/02/23/uk-live-music-reacts-reopening/ https://selector.news/2021/02/23/uk-live-music-reacts-reopening/#respond Tue, 23 Feb 2021 19:57:06 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=6941 Yesterday, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that nightclubs and concerts could return to the country as early as June 21st, 2021. The timeline is based on a four-step program that will see COVID-19 restrictions gradually ease as long as cases continue to drop.

As one might expect, concerts and nightclubs are in the third and fourth stages, which feature the most conditions needed. While certainly an important development for those in favor of bringing back live music, some industry professionals have argued that additional support will be necessary.

Shortly after Johnson made the announcement, UK Music CEO Jamie Njoku-Goodwin responded with a statement. In his detailed letter, he expressed his excitement for the gradual reopening of the country and outlined the impact it will have on the struggling live music industry.

“It is fantastic news for the 200,000 people working in the music industry and millions of music fans that we are just a few months away from live music bursting back onto stages,” Njoku-Goodwin wrote. “Our world-leading live music scene – ranging from stadium and concert-hall filling acts to emerging solo performers in the local pub – will help lift people’s spirits and deliver a huge cultural and economic boost as we emerge from this pandemic.”

He continued: “…It is vital that our industry gets the continued economic support it needs to keep us going through to the point we can restart. The prospect of there being no legal impediments to live music events means issues like insurance are now even more pressing. They now present one of the final barriers to getting events going this summer. The industry has worked tirelessly with the government to explore testing, better ventilation and many other innovative solutions to help lift the pause button, which has crippled our industry for the past year.”

In addition to Njoku-Goodwin, the CEO of the Music Venue Trust, Mark Dayvd, echoed the concerns of his colleague in a statement to DJ Mag. He posited that the leadership “must clearly lay out exactly how the government is going to provide that sector-specific support” in their budget moving forward.

No details of an additional U.K. government support scheme to be implemented during the reopening have been announced at the time of writing.

Jeff Mills to Release Seance-Themed 3-LP Album, The Clairvoyant https://selector.news/2021/02/16/jeff-mills-clairvoyant/ https://selector.news/2021/02/16/jeff-mills-clairvoyant/#respond Tue, 16 Feb 2021 20:03:55 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=6743 Coming later in February is a new album from Jeff Mills titled The Clairvoyant. Inspired by the rise of claimed psychics after World War I and the end of the Spanish Flu pandemic, he seeks to tell a detailed story with his latest endeavor. The vinyl release will contain 15 tracks across three LPs, and the digital version of the album will contain a bonus track titled “From The Mind’s Eye.”

In an effort to enhance the mystical nature of the album, in a press release, Mills shared specific instructions on how one should listen to the album. Describing it as something similar to a seance, he recommends users create a low-lit, quiet environment to get the full effect out of the music.

“The album plays in the way of a metaphysical seance and should be listened to in a darkened, candle-lit room, Mills wrote. “A silent space, free of outside noise, chatter or talking, and other visual distractions. The album should be listened in full – from beginning to end.”

Mills has kept busy as of late. Earlier in the month, he announced his new media effort, The Escape Velocity Magazine. In addition to the aforementioned publication, back in the fall, he teamed up with Jean-Phi Dary for a new electronic jazz project, The Paradox.

The Clairvoyant by Jeff Mills is slated for release on Friday, February 26th on his own Axis Records. You can learn more about the upcoming release and purchase a copy for yourself via the label website.

Tobacco Dock Announces Virtual Reality Club Space https://selector.news/2021/02/16/tobacco-dock-virtual/ https://selector.news/2021/02/16/tobacco-dock-virtual/#respond Tue, 16 Feb 2021 17:56:52 +0000 https://selector.news/?p=6732 In an effort to entertain fans during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many artists and promoters have hosted online-only events. Primarily through the use of live streaming platforms, artists are able to perform to fans all over the world while it’s still unsafe to gather in person.

While this model has created opportunities for some, countless music venues have been left scrambling for ways to keep the lights on. In an effort to combat this problem, promoter LWE and London’s Tobacco Dock are thinking outside the box with a recently announced venture into digital event space.

Debuting in April is Tobacco Dock Virtual, a virtual reality-enabled club experience. It’s powered by VR platform Sansar, and fans will be able to create an avatar and party in real-time with clubgoers in a digitally recreated Tobacco Dock.

On the website dedicated to the virtual space, LWE directors, Paul Jack and Will Harold, spoke on the opportunities the program looks to create. “TDV is the next step on our journey will pave the way for hybrid events within a fully immersive digital and physical space, providing a huge new platform to showcase music,” they wrote.

A kick-off party was announced to celebrate the virtual grand opening. Over Easter weekend, nearly fifty artists will perform to a crowd of fan avatars for a free, two-night event. Fans will be able to enjoy a multi-genre selection of talent across four virtual stages. Some of the performers slated to take the stage include Adam Beyer, Chase & Status, Camo & Krooked, Patrick Topping, Eats Everything, and Skream.

Those who do not have access to a virtual reality-enabled device are still in luck as the show can be enjoyed by other means. Anyone with a PC, Mac, or mobile device will be able to tune in for the show as it is available in the Sansar app and will also be streamed on Twitch and YouTube.

Tobacco Dock’s virtual club will open on Friday, April 2nd, 2021. You can learn more about their digital realm, the performers, and how to join in on the fun on the Tobacco Dock Virtual website.
